How to Use a Capo 5 Useful Tips Suzy S. Have you ever been frustrated with the key of a song, and wanted to change it instantly without having to transpose everything and learn new chords? Well, now you can! Learning how to use a capo can be a lifesaver, especially if you enjoy singing along or if you frequently work with vocalists. For an easy, hands-on way to see how a capo works, try playing a normal C chord. Place your capo on the first fret. Then play the same position you just played youll notice its now half-step higher (C#). Next, move the capo to the second fret. Voila now you have the key of D. See where were going with this? As you experiment more with your capo, youll get better at recognizing which chords youre actually playing. In the meantime, consider keeping a capo chart nearby to cross-reference. Here are some additional tips to keep in mind: Check your tuning. Clamping the capo down on your strings sometimes causes them to go out of tune, so youll want to tune your guitar again when youre done using the capo. This is especially applicable for electric guitars, since the strings are so much lighter. Always place the capo slightly behind the fret never directly on top of it. Experiment with different types of capos. Spring-loaded (or trigger) capos are a popular choice, which are easier to use than a c-clamp capo. The latter type requires you to manually tighten the capo against the fret, whereas the former can be taken off quickly and with one hand. Another type is a toggle capo, which is generally the least expensive, but is also very flimsy. Shubb and Kyser are two well-known brands to check out. Use a partial capo for alternate tunings. A partial (or cut) capo covers only some of the strings. It gives off a distinct drone sound often used in Celtic music, and it also allows you to explore with alternate tunings, like Drop-D. Dont be afraid to experiment and play around with it! Watch for buzzing. If you have the capo in place, but your strings are still buzzing, try adjusting the capos position until you get a clean sound. As you pack for your trip to France, its important to keep in mind your needs and goals â€" and where youll be and what youll be doing while youre over there! The number one recommendation I would give to would-be travelers to France is to pack lightly. Especially if you live in an English-speaking country other than Great Britain, youre probably in for a relatively long flight. Once youre there, especially if youll be traveling around significantly, you wont want to have to lug too much around with you. Remember that France is not only a civilized country, but it also contains many wonderful, desirable items you may wish to bring back with you. You might even want to bring an extra bag if you plan to do lots of shopping. What to Pack for France Before you go to France, be sure to study these eight essential French phrases for travelers, and try the 10 tips to learn French fast! How to Travel Light on Your Trip to France If youre near time for a wardrobe update, consider buying some of your new clothes after you arrive in France. For those you do bring, select just a few essentials that are appropriate to the season. If you need a winter coat or other warm clothes, wear them in layers during the flight. Consider travel-sized essentials. This will also help with US security restrictions on liquids such as toothpaste and shampoo. If you can, leave the technology behind. Especially if its a short trip, consider whether you can make it without your laptop. If you have things you must do using a device, will an iPad or iPhone suffice? Consider bringing a USB if you need data storage, and looking up an internet cafe while abroad for any more complicated technological or online necessities. It is possible to go without checked luggage. On my first three international trips â€" including a semester abroad and an orchestral tour that required my violin â€" I avoiding checked luggage. It made things simpler and easier both before and after arrival. Consider Your Accommodations My second recommendation is to consider where you will be staying. Will you have a place to lock up your things to keep them safe? Will you need to keep them with you perpetually? If you leave them in your room, will they be secure? Dont bring anything you wouldnt trust to survive in the places youll be going, and be prepared with a back-up plan to replace or retrieve backups of anything that goes missing. This probably sounds obvious to many people. Many people probably have a  with them most of the time on their mobile phones. Sometimes simple or low-tech solutions can be just as good. In high school, my mom stuck several disposable cameras in my bags for my trip to Europe, and I used them. They worked quite well. In college, I took a miniature camera, and the batteries fell out when it took a plunge down the steps of a cathedral. Much of the data from that batch of photos was lost because it took me too long to retrieve the parts and put them together. Power Up Your Devices For those who bring chargeable or plug-in items, keep in mind also that you will need converters that will first of all allow you to plug in your device, and second of all convert the electrical current properly if there isnt one internal to the device already. Laptop computers often have current converters in their electrical chords, but still require a plug adapter to allow the end of the chord to plug into French electrical outlets. Fortunately for international travelers, if you are traveling to more than one European country, most European countries are consistent among themselves. There are many who would argue however that video games can be just as immersive as a novel, and they can stimulate the imagination in ways that may even be beyond great literature. For one thing gamers are making decisions that affect the progress of the game - they are involved and reacting to the challenges, engaging reflexively and strategically. While a game like space invaders might not offer much emotional and imaginative engagement, there are role play and exploration type games, that present players with a rich and involved fantasy world. Games like The Legend of Zelda, or the Final Fantasy series immerse the player in a rich and expansive playing area, while providing a detailed narrative which they can become actively involved in. Games like these let the player participate in and influence multiple story lines, with the whole experience couched in cinema-like graphics and sound. Every day thousands of people around the world participate in Minecraft - a so called `sand box video game,` in which players can move around and build structures in a virtual 3D world. Litcraft is a partnership between Lancaster University and Microsoft, which aims at mapping out and building literary spaces from the world of literature in the 3D world of Minecraft. Their first project has been recreating in painstaking and meticulous detail the world of Robert Lewis Stephenson`s Treasure Island. The project is aimed at being more than just a curious rendition of a literary setting in a 3D computer simulation. Professor Sally Bushell, Lead researcher and head of Lancaster University`s English and creative writing department has said the role of Litcraft is to bring literature to more people, calling their project:`An educational model that connects the imaginative spatial experience of reading the text to an immersive experience in the game world.` Speaking about the treasure Island representation in Minecraft, Professor Bushell has expressed the hope that it will bring more people to the book, as well as providing a new dimension to those readers who are already familiar with it. `We hope it will motivate reluctant readers ? we can say, `We`re going to read the book and then at one point, we`ll go play on the ship.` I would have loved it as a kid. It is an empathetic task ? you do what the characters did yourself, so you understand why they act they way they did in the book.` Players of Minecraft are used to literary worlds being rendered on their platform - Westeros, the vast fantasy realm from Game of Thrones has already been created in its entirety; while there may be as many as 1000 accurate renditions of Hogwarts from the Harry Potter books. Feedback from the Treasure Island Minecraft depiction has been positive, with one child declaring that `I like that you get to see the pictures. You don`t have to make them in your head. And I liked the ship, Ben Gunn`s cave and the parrots.` The inherent multi player aspect of Minecraft opens up many interesting didactic possibilities - one example being that individuals can work together to reenact scenes from literature, with each player taking the role of a specific character, and seeing the story from their point of view. Professor Bushell has said that that a future project will be William Golding`s novel Lord of the Flies, and that the multiplayer aspect will develop children`s understanding of the book. `In that case, you want all the kids in there playing out a scenario and asking philosophical questions.
